sudden ionospheric disturbance project

This project is about observing the sun's solar flare activity. My team and I had to build a some sort of satellite contraption to receive very low frequency radio signals from australia and japan. Then we had to monitor the wave pattern 24 hours. If there's sudden change in the wave pattern, that means there's a solar flare happening out there in space. During the judgement day (at the National Space Agency!), we're all kinda felt a bit inferior to SSP as their  satellite are much more prettier. However, during their presentation, I asked a question "For 1 month you've been doing this, don't you get a single solar flare?". And they don't. They didn't get to see any solar flare so that's the end of them and we got the first place.
